Media Awareness
Feeding Group Frenzy
The use of political slogans, platitudes, banners, jingoism, repetitive chants and cheers, party conventions, pep rallies, forced rivalry, helps build strong identification with party membership.

Using Emotional Language and Imagery
The use of emotionally-evocative imagery, words, music and staging is an extremely effective way to manipulate public sentiment. Button words and theme music can hit the sentimental chord of a group

For example, George W. Bush’s final appearance at the 2004 GOP convention to accept his re-nomination was staged to elicit awe and pride from constituents. As Bush walked across the stage toward the microphone, he was swathed in saintly illumination and heart-tugging music, his every gesture, expression, inflection and word choreographed to convey the image of a great leader of courage, integrity, commitment and wisdom.

Polemics
Polemics are a form of expressing an intensely biased opinion or belief. Many speeches and essays are polemical diatribes and emotional rants. Polemical speeches may be based on fact, belief, or opinion, but they are often delivered without qualifying the limits of the knowledge and expertise of the speaker.

Cultivating Knee-jerk responses
Knee-jerk responses are culturally cultivated through the use of advertising and sound bytes. Rush Limbaugh provides an essential service. For those who are ardently convinced they know something but don’t have cogent arguments to back up their convictions, Limbaugh and his cohort (Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Ann Coulter, etc.) provide a wealth of knee-jerk sound bites that they can repeat verbatim, whenever they need them to drown out discussion or conflicting data. Everything and everyone is neatly categorized within these closed systems of thinking.
