The impact of cruelty and violence, whether within families or across nations, is of primary concern and interferes with all other efforts at producing healthy, just and compassionate societies. Thousands of scientific and clinical studies have been conducted on the biological, physiological and psychosocial aspects of violence, aggression and trauma.
A mixture of factors are known to contribute to violence, including: destructive parenting, genetic and temperamental vulnerability, mood disorders, medical mimickers and dual disorders, as well as the effects of trauma, abuse and neglect, brain injury, substance abuse, peer pressure and media overload. Violence can cross generations. An abusive parent is more likely to have been abused as a child. A battered woman is more likely to abuse or neglect her child. Studies have found significant rates of past abuse experienced by incarcerated and homeless women. Many conditions that lead to antisocial behavior can be prevented or treated. A person exhibiting violent, aggressive or sadistic behavior is likely to suffer from serious neurochemical or hormonal imbalances due to head injuries, mood and seizure disorders or substance abuse. Clues to these imbalances are often seen in scans of brain activity and may be treatable. |
